Sailormoon R is a 2004 action/fantasy/sci-fi film directed by George Lucas and Naoko Takeuchi. Based on Sailor Moon USA by Masamune Shirow, which itself is loosely based on the Sailor Moon anime, the film stars Emma Watson as Sailor Moon, who has to deal with an alien invasion and a new evil known as the Black Moon Clan. Initial theatrical screenings, as well as the initial DVD (and pan-and-scan VHS) release, were flat, but the letterboxed VHS release, the 2005 re-release in Real D, and the 2008 BluRay release (and 2010 DVD re-release) were in 3-D. Along with Sailor Moon, the film is the first Disney Digital 3-D release. Takeuchi later said that she only directed the film because she wanted to see how the source material, Sailor Moon USA, turned out to be. After directing the film, she officially retconned her own version of the manga in favor of Sailor Moon USA.
