- Attempts to make this film have occured since 1997, with TriStar Pictures and Lions Gate Films among the top contenders before Hollywood Pictures picked up distribution rights in April of 2003.
- Labon Hester was tapped to be Satoshi but decided to star in Negima! instead.
- This is the only live adaptation of Pokémon to feature the original Japanese voice cast in the Japanese dub; starting with Pocket Monsters: Aim For the Thunder, Masako Katsuki would take over as Satoshi, Aya Hirano as Kasumi, and Daisuke Ono as Takeshi (among other replacements).

The film premiered at a Pokémon theme park in Japan on March 1, 2007. Naturally, the audience loved the routine, and the incident is featured in several YouTube Poops. The film was released worldwide on April 6, 2007. The MPAA rated the film PG "for fantasy violence and rude humor, and for some language". The film was released on Betamax, VHS, DVD, and BluRay by Hollywood Pictures Home Video on December 25, 2007.
